Spotlight: Meet the characters of the Holiday Magic Series by Susanne Matthews and Misty Matthews

Holiday Magic is a series of books, each one focusing around a specific holiday theme. Book One, Holiday Magic, Second Chance is a reunion story. Book Two, The Perfect Choice is about honesty, trust, and true love. Both Book One and Book Two celebrate Christmas.

It’s time to meet the main characters in each book:

Holiday Magic, Book One, Second Chance

Georgia Baxter

Good morning. I’m Georgia, the older twin, and as different from my sister as night and day.  I’ve spent the last three years in New York City, hiding from life, trying to mend my broken heart, and pick up the pieces of my shattered life. I’ve built up an excellent custom design jewelry business, Delicate Designs, where I specialize in large coat pins. I decided a few weeks ago to go back home. I miss my sister and trying to forget the man who hurt me so badly isn’t working. While I’m not convinced it’s the right thing to do, I’d planned to go home after the New Year, and give it a try. Funny how things work out. Eleni needs me to look after her business while she’s away working on a big contract, so I’ve sold my condo, packed up what I wanted and I’m heading to Philadelphia before Thanksgiving to give her the help she needs.  I guess that’s what big sisters do, regardless of how painful it might be. My ex-fiancĂ© is her business partner, but Eleni promises we’ll have minimal contact. I hate to admit it even to myself, but despite the way he hurt me, I still love him.

Mark Anderson

Hi there. Mark Anderson at your service. I’m the owner of Anderson Security, an established personal security firm, and Eleni’s partner in Holiday Magic, the special events business she runs. I do the books and help out with some of the higher end events and weddings. I’m also a first class shmuck. I got wasted at my bachelor party and ended up in bed with one of the bridesmaids. Georgia, my fiancĂ©e, walked in and found us that way—naked of course. She cancelled the wedding and left town. I can’t blame her. I’ve tried to figure out what happened, but my memory is a blank. I’ll never stop loving her, but I don’t deserve her forgiveness.  I haven’t dated since that night. I still live in our apartment surrounded by the things we’d purchased. This is my punishment—knowing there’ll never be the future we had planned. Eleni’s coming to see me this morning. I wonder who she roped into managing the business while she’s away?

The Perfect Choice, Holiday Magic, Book Two

Eleni Baxter

Well hello. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Eleni, Georgia’s sister, and I’m so excited she’s agreed to come home and help me out. For a minute there, I thought she might bail, but she’s always been a trooper. I sometimes leap before I look, and I didn’t realize some of the ramifications of the contract I’d signed until after I’d signed it. I was chosen to be Ocean Front Casino’s exclusive special events coordinator for the holiday season—Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day—and I’m all excited about it—well most of it. I have to stay in the casino for the entire time of the contract—talk about a slave driver. Everyone speaks well of Mr. Simmons, the reclusive millionaire who owns the place, and while I’ve spoken to him twice, I’ve never met him. Apparently he isn’t well, and I’ll be dealing with the casino manager, Joe Smits, in his absence.
I’ve avoided relationships—I don’t want to be hurt the way my twin was—but my biological clock must be ticking loudly. Just before Labor Day, I met a guy in the park, a man with an interest in dinosaurs, and I can’t forget him even though I haven’t the faintest idea where to find him. I hope everything works out. I wish I’d gotten that guy’s full name.

Garth Joseph Smits Simmons the Third

Quite a mouthful, isn’t it? Hi, you can call me Joe. I’m the heir to the Simmons fortune and the owner of the Ocean Front Casino. I also have a phobia of the media and anyone knowing who I really am. I’m lonely and would give anything to find someone who could love me for me—not my bank account. I was in Philadelphia late last summer and met the woman of my dreams. She’s beautiful and funny. She loves dinosaurs. She walked me to a shelter and then got in a cab and drove away. I was ready to hire a detective to find her when she fell into my lap again—well, not exactly. You see, I want something different for my newest resort, and I chose Eleni Baxter’s designs for the Halloween extravaganza. Imagine my surprise when I realized Eleni Baxter and my blonde were one and the same. Now, I signed her to an exclusive four-month contract, and I’m going to see if she can fall in love with me—plain old Joe Smits. Won’t she be excited when she learns who I really am?

Character Meet and Greet with Author Misty Matthews

Coming Home, Book One, Taking a Chance on Love is the first in a series of books about the
people of Chance, Arizona, a small town set on the edge of the Sonora Desert. It’s also set against the Christmas Holiday Season. Here’s a bit about the main characters.

Alana Stewart

Hello, so nice to meet you at this busy time of year. I rode my new motorcycle all the way from Austin, Texas to Chance. I’ve come home for Christmas—only because my mother guilted me into it, but I suppose seeing my kid sister, Melody, her baby girl, Isabelle, and Mom and Dad will be worth it—as long as Mom doesn’t spend the entire holiday making me feel bad about one thing or another. You know how moms can be. My life is in Austin where I practice law with one of the city’s most prestigious firms. I’m hoping to make partner in the next year or so. When I left Chance, I had no intention of returning; in fact, this is my first time back, and from the stares I’m getting as I walk back to my ride, it hasn’t changed much. No doubt someone’s on the phone with Mom right now, telling her what a bad girl I’m being. I just left Tate’s bookstore—my old hang out. I’m sorry Mr. Tate wasn’t there, but his son, Connor, was. What a hunk of man-candy he is. Maybe he can help me pass the time until I can escape back to the city.

Connor Tate

Welcome to Tate’s Bookstore. I’m Connor. I took over the business from my dad a few years ago when I realized that life in the big city wasn’t for me. I make an excellent living under my pseudonym, J.T. Connor. I’m a best-selling author, but no one, other than my parents is aware of it. I value my privacy. I’m known as a recluse in literary circles, and I like the mystery it adds to my characters. I love Arizona and the desert and can’t imagine ever leaving it for more than short holidays now and then. I was blown away when Alana Stewart came in a few minutes ago. Talk about little girl all grown up. I mean she is hot—sizzling. That tight leather and her hair—man, I’m hard again just thinking about her. I’d better watch myself around her though. She’s a J.T. Connor fan and I almost lost it trying to explain why I have his recent books here for sale when they won’t be released until next week. She’s determined to ferret out my secret relationship with J.T. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing her again, but nothing can come of it since she’s determined to stay away from Chance.

Blog Tour: On the 12th Date of Christmas by Nikki Lynn Barrett, spotlight and review

On the 12th Date of Christmas
by Nikki Lynn Barrett

After being mugged, Robin Sorenson is left shaken and her spirit in humanity is broken. Worse, she's not sure how to deal with the new anxieties or who to confide in, since she's always preached to pick oneself up and move on. Yeah, she's been the go to girl when anyone's had problems. Christmas is coming, and her belief in magic and miracles has faded.

Then Jonas comes back.
Jonas Aimes made a mistake when he walked away from Robin a year earlier. A big one. He'd loved her, always had and still does, but his desire to please his aging and strict parents took precedence. Back from the overseas internship they'd struggled to get him in, he plans on winning Robin back. What he didn't count on was discovering the shell of the vivacious woman he'd loved.
Broken.
Remembering her love of Christmas, Jonas pulls the holiday heartstrings. What? All is fair and love and war, right?
Twelve days, Twelve Dates.
Robin is speechless when Jonas not only refuses to leave her alone, but dares her to accept his cheesy holiday-themed challenge. Twelve dates to give him a chance to prove that he loves her and is never leaving her again.
But in the season known for miracles, can Robin find the magic needed to open her heart and faith once more ... or will she forever wonder about the ghost of the Christmas past that could have been?

My Review

On the 12th Date of Christmas…

4 shooting stars

Hotness factor: Get your mind out of the gutter it’s Christmas!

Disclaimers: I received an ARC in exchange if an honest review

… my true gave to me? One lovesick ex-boyfriend, two controlling in-laws, three revealed secrets, four new family members and whole lot more anxiety!  I couldn’t help myself I just had to do this. On the 12th Date of Christmas is the sequel of The Secret Santa Wishing Well from the same author Nikki Lynn Barrett that I reviewed less than a month ago. I’ve watched about 10 Christmas movies since then, Brits love American Christmas movies! So let’s cast this one too.
Robin (Shenae Grimes) and Jonas (Jesse Metcalfe, ten years ago) are reunited after he abruptly left her in The Secret Santa Wishing Well. It’s a few weeks before Christmas and he came back to make amends and get his true love back. But Robin has been through a lot in less than 12 months so Jonas’ return might not be such a welcome one. Jonas then suggests the 12 dates’ arrangement… men!
If you’ve read Nikki’s great novels before you know she likes her male characters to redeem themselves in their women’s eyes and Jonas didn’t escape that fate.  They are both so young but had to deal with so much, it was very touching. Jacob and Cheyenne from the first book were there as well and we got to see their happy ending evolving in this book which was personally my favorite part because I really enjoyed these characters (hint, hint). I highly recommend it and cannot wait for the third book (hint, hint)…

Excerpt

"Are you going to marry mr. Jonas?"
Robin had to keep her hands steady on the wheel at the shock of the question. "why do you ask that?"
"well, Mr jonas is a Santa's helper and you two like each other. Daddy-Jacob is a Santa's helper and now he loves mommy and they are being married. You and Mr. Jonas make the same faces when you see each other that mommy and daddy-Jacob do."
This boy was way too wise for his young age. He picked up on things that sometimes even adults didn't.
"i don't think we're going to get married any time soon, Ben," she said softly. No, they had way too many unresolved issues that hadn't even come close to surfacing yet. His family for instance, just to name one.
"but he likes you. And you like him. Why not?"
Ahh, there came the inquisitive side of Ben. How could she make him understand.
"how do you know he likes me and that i like him, young one?" robin teased.
Ben sighed in his childlike exasperation. "i already told you! You make weird faces at each other." he acted as if that were the answer that made the most perfect sense. He raised his hands in the air for emphasis. No doubt he got that hand gesture talk from Cheyenne, who did that kind of thing all the time.
She laughed lightly while driving up the aisles, searching for a decent place to park. "when i park, i want you to show me the faces you say we make."
"I can do that!" Ben said proudly. He sounded all too excited about the idea.
Robin chuckled. She bet he could. Pulling into a spot surprisingly close to the front, she turned off the engine. "all right, mister. I want to see these faces." she turned back to look at him. His grin was wide and mischievous as he made a variation of faces that had her laughing so hard, her stomach hurt. "you mean to tell me we look that silly?" she covered her stomach with her hand, trying to calm down.
"yes! You guys are very silly!" Ben nodded as if he were in authority.
"oh my. I'm going to have to remember that. I can't be making such silly faces and having cute little boys like you mocking me," robin teased.
"you told me to show you!" Ben stuck his tongue out at her.
She laughed again. "yes, i sure did. I'm glad you told me just how silly I've been. Ready to go inside?"
Ben unbuckled himself in record time. He stood next to the car before she'd even come around to his side.
"well, that answers my question. Did you lock the door?" Ben nodded in response as he took her hand. "okay, good. Let's go then. I don't want to keep you out too long. Everyone is looking forward to fun tonight."

On the 12th date of Christmas is a standalone book, but there is another story that's connected, just by the same characters. The book that started it all. The Secret Santa Wishing Well tells the story of Jacob and Cheyenne, and robin plays a big role in that story.

The magic of Christmas has been lost to Jacob winston. At the suggestion of his ill sister, jacob takes a job as a secret santa at the mall, hoping to restore his christmas spirit. Even that doesn't seem to work, until a special little boy ambles up to make a very special wish...

Cheyenne jensen is struggling to raise her two kids without the help of her ex-husband who refuses to acknowledge his daughter's existence and doesn't provide for the son he does. This christmas is shaping up to be as heartbreaking as the last, until her son ben's kind actions lead a stranger to them.
Ah, but it's christmas time and the magic has begun.
When Jacob and Cheyenne meet, neither can deny their immediate attraction to one another. As situations arise that require they spend more time together, their feelings grow stronger and stronger.
With christmas fast approaching, the pair learn what matters most in life. Now, if only they could ditch the ghost of christmases past.
Maybe this holiday will bring some wishes come true- for everyone after all.

All I Want for Christmas is a Cowboy
By Katie Lane, Emma Cane & Jennifer Ryan

Blurbs
What’s better than Christmas? Christmas and Cowboys. Contemporary romance stars Emma Cane, Jennifer Ryan, and Katie Lane join together for a holiday anthology to remember.

“The Christmas Cabin” by Emma Cane
Sandy, recently diagnosed with MS and abandoned by her husband, is determined to make Christmas special for her five-year-old Nate. While they’re trooping through the woods to cut down their Christmas tree, a snowstorm arises, and a mysterious old ranch hand points them toward an abandoned cabin. Little do they realize, the ranch hand also guides cowboy Doug Thalberg to the same place…

“Can’t Wait” by Jennifer Ryan
Before The Hunted series, Caleb and Summer had a whirlwind romance not to be forgotten...
Caleb Bowden has a lot to thank his best friend, Jack, for - saving his life in Iraq and giving him a job helping him run his family’s ranch. He also introduced him to the most incredible woman he’s ever met. Too bad he can’t ask her out. You do not date your best friend’s sister. Summer and Caleb share a closeness she’s never felt for anyone, but the stubborn man refuses to turn the flirtatious friendship into something meaningful. Frustrated and tired of wishing to be happy, Caleb tells Jack how he feels about Summer. With his friend’s help, he plans a surprise Christmas proposal she’ll never forget - because he can’t wait to make her his wife.

“Marry Christmas” by Katie Lane
Alana Hale is tired of irresponsible beach bums whose only plan for the future is catching the next “awesome” wave. So when she tries her luck with an internet dating service and ends up hitting the Responsible-Sensitive-Man jackpot, she wastes no time accepting Clint McCormick’s invitation to spend the holidays on his family’s ranch. But when an unexpected blizzard strands Alana, she’ll be forced to find refuge in the arms of a womanizing rodeo cowboy who knows how to take the chill off a cold winter night. Now Alana will have to make a choice between the man who heats her blood and the man who touches her heart. Or will she? Mistaken identity will give Alana the man of her dreams and a very “Marry” Christmas.

EMMA CANE grew up reading and soon discovered that she liked to write passionate stories of teenagers in space. Her love of “passionate stories” has never gone away, although today she concentrates on the heartwarming characters of Valentine, her fictional small town in the Colorado Rockies. JENNIFER RYAN, author of The Hunted Series, writes romantic suspense and contemporary small-town romances.

Jennifer lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and three children. When she isn’t writing a book, she’s reading one. Her obsession with both is often revealed in the state of her home, and how late dinner is to the table. New Book Release - The Christmas Spirit by Susan Buchanan

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
BY SUSAN BUCHANAN

Christmas is coming, but not everyone is looking forward to it.
Rebecca has just been dumped and the prospect of spending the holiday period with her parents is less than appealing.
Eighty- two year old Stanley lost his beloved wife, Edie, to cancer. How will he cope with his
first Christmas without her?
Jacob’s university degree hasn’t helped him get a job, and it looks like he’ll still be signing on come New Year.
Workaholic Meredith would rather spend December 25th at home alone with a ready meal and a DVD box set. Can anything make her embrace the spirit of the season?
The enigmatic Natalie Hope takes over the reins at the Sugar and Spice bakery and cafe in an attempt to spread  some festive cheer and restore Christmas spirit, but will she succeed?

What does Author Susan Buchanan want us to know about her?
The rules are simple. There are 20 questions but you only have to answer 10-15:

As a writer, what drives you?
I want to write books, pure and simple. If  I can make a living out of it, even better, as then I don’t need a supplementary day job and I can write more! I am naturally a very driven person. I used to work in International Sales, so I needed to be. I am a determined, tenacious wee blighter! But, it has to be said, seeing the end result, hearing the excitement mount from readers hotly anticipating my next release, that drives me. So much so, it convinced to me to write a continuation to my first book which will hopefully be out by the end of 2014.

Can you tell us about The Christmas Spirit?
The Christmas Spirit is the story of four people who have had a pretty lousy year and have absolutely no reason to be looking forward to Christmas. They then meet Natalie Hope who tries to turn their luck around.

Happy Ever After or Happy For Now? Why?
Well, it depends if you mean in my own life or in my books! I’m a little bit cynical, or maybe just realistic, in that I don’t believe there is necessarily only one person for each of us. Otherwise why would people get divorced and re-marry? (not that I’m saying they need to!) I like my novels normally to have more realistic storylines, not necessarily the heroine rides off with a knight on his white horse! So Happy For Now would do for me in my books, as you can’t foretell the future. In my own life, well, my OH is pretty handy in the kitchen, so I’ll hold on to him!

How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in your books?
Subconsciously I daresay a lot. I don’t create any characters based on me, or on people I know, but our family does have a penchant for bacon rolls on Christmas morning... A close friend said she saw a lot of Gill from The Dating Game in me - must have been the workaholic part! And my auntie said she saw parts of me in Sign of the Times, so I guess there really is no getting away from it, unless I decide to suddenly start writing about flesh-eating zombies. Then it might be more difficult to draw a parallel or at least I hope it would!

Describe yourself in five words…
determined, loyal, friendly, enthusiastic, talkative

Do you have specific techniques you use to develop the plot and stay on track?
I do write chapter and character plans, as in my first book I went off the Richter scale on word count initially. I try now to keep the chapters, most of them, around the same length, and I divide the word count up once I know how many chapters I am going to have. That way I don’t have thirty chapters of 5K words instead of 2K!
I am, however, open to ideas filtering through to me even as I write, and I’m quite willing to change the plot, if I come up with a better idea for certain scenes. I like the flexibility of this and it keeps it interesting, I hope for the readers, as much as for me.

If you were a character in your book you would be…
I’d probably be Rebecca, although I know nothing about Art. Or maybe Meredith’s sister, Amelia, just without the squillions!

Time for favourite: song, color, book, TV series, movie, food, drink…
Favourite song - it’s really a piece of music, not a song - Shostakovich’s Romance.
Colour - blue probably, then red.
Book - ugh, just one? Probably The Neverending Story by Michael Ende then!
TV series - I generally only watch quiz shows, but I am very anxious for Silk, the legal drama, to return to our screens as I love Rupert Penry-Jones and it’s actually very good (I’d watch it even if RPJ wasn’t in it, but if any producers are reading this, please don’t axe him!)
Movie - Dirty Dancing - Nobody puts Baby in a corner!
Food - pasta - especially lobster ravioli- yum!
Drink - no secret, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - in fact, I may have a glass later!

How (or when) do you decide that you are finished writing a story?
When it reaches its natural conclusion. Sometimes I leave it relatively open, but I do tie up all the loose ends. So, basically, when I think the characters’ stories have been told.

What are you working on right now?
Well, I am busy preparing for The Christmas Spirit launch, which goes live the same day as this interview. Two weeks after that, I will be continuing with my fourth novel, What If. I am about 30% done with the first draft. It’s a little different for me, as the protagonist is male; a gorgeous forty-something who suddenly realises there has to be more to Life than getting laid. He has an epiphany and decides to take a trip down memory lane, in the hope that it will take him where he needs to go.

The good guy, the bad boy and the right guy…could they be one and the same?
I’m sure we could make him so, but I like to keep them separate. I think two of the three is more probable.

The old adage “Write about what you know”
Well, I do write about what I know, but The Christmas Spirit centres around a bakery, and I know hee haw about baking. I’ve made a rhubarb crumble and some failed scones in my life and that’s the sum total of my baking talents. So, I had to seek some help on this one. The only thing I know about cakes is how to eat them!
But generally speaking my books are about what I know: people, relationships, travel, Scotland. So, yes, I am a great believer in writing what you know. It’s more authentic. So you won’t find me writing about flesh-eating zombies just yet!
