EXCERPT
Connor tried to look busy as Alana browsed the bookshelves. The woman had definitely changed. Though he was two years older than she was, he remembered her from high school. They’d been a lot alike back then, both of them with their noses always stuck in books, not quite fitting in with the rest. The similarities should have made them friends, but as a teen, he hadn’t had the nerve to talk to a girl, even an equally unpopular one.
He vaguely remembered her coming into the store those afternoons when he worked in the back unpacking boxes of new books and sorting them to put on the shelves. He’d been enchanted by her, watching surreptitiously from behind the shelves. How animated she’d become when she’d talk to Dad about the current book she was reading or about the places she’d like to visit. He would stand hidden in the back, just listening to her voice, but too shy to even consider joining the discussions. He’d really liked the girl she’d become when she visited the shop back then—a girl who was nothing like the cowering mouse he saw at school each day.
Somehow, he didn’t think unpopularity would be her problem now. She was the perfect woman—smart, extremely sexy with or without the leather, and for goodness’ sake, she rode a motorcycle. She exuded confidence and poise, and wasn’t afraid to take risks; just look at the way she’d been blatantly flirting with him.
Despite his best effort, he was having a hard time controlling his body. Of all the days to wear jeans that were a touch too tight. If he didn’t get his eyes off her cute little derriere, he’d humiliate himself. She was affecting him far more deeply than he’d expected. He took a deep breath, forcefully tore his eyes away from her leather-clad bottom, and returned to sorting the new shipment of books that had just arrived.

CHARACTER BIOS
Alana Stewart is the eldest in her family. She’s 28, almost 29 and has one sister, Melody. Alana is a lawyer with a firm in Austin, Texas. She’s one hundred percent dedicated to her job and that’s put her on the fast track for a junior partnership, something she wants more than anything. When she isn’t arguing cases in court or working on briefs, Alana likes to ride her motorcycle. The wind in her face is the only way she can relax.
She left her hometown of Chance, Arizona, ten years ago and hasn’t been back since. Growing up as a bookish nerd, her memories of her small hometown aren’t pleasant ones, and combined with a overprotective mother, Alana has no desire to return to the gossip and limitations of small town living. The only reason she’s come back this year is because she was guilted into it by her mother. This’ll be her niece’s first Christmas she’ll remember and Mom wants her home for a traditional Stewart Christmas. Alana reluctantly agreed and rode her motorcycle from Austin to Chance. She plans to blow this Popsicle stand as soon as she can. She’s home for this year, but she has no intention of ever coming back.
Connor Tate grew up in Chance, Arizona, and after a few years away, he realized there’s nowhere else on earth he’d rather be. When he left the big city and returned home, he took over as manager of Tate’s Bookstore, the small independent bookstore owned by his father. He loves his job. His parents travel extensively, so, despite the fact that he’s in his early thirties, he lives in the family home with them, looking after the house and grounds when they’re away. He’s also a volunteer fireman. He loves helping others. When he needs to clear his head, he rides his motorcycle out into the Sonora Desert, to a special place he loved where he can be alone and relax.
Connor as a secret. In addition to his duties as bookstore manager, he’s also reclusive best-selling author J.T. Connor. No one in Chance, other than his immediate family, knows his secret identity and like Superman, he wants to keep it that way. He’s avoided getting involved with any of the local ladies—too much danger messing in your own sandbox. When he needs female companionship, he takes a holiday, but Chance always calls him back.
AUTHOR BIO
Misty Matthews is a newly formed writing partnership between Susanne Matthews and Misty Cail. These authors have never met and the book was created by grace and virtue of email and Internet chats. It's a true Twenty-first century miracle.
Misty and Susanne met in an online Facebook chat group back in December, 2012 and have become fast friends and partners. Misty, the plot genius, had the idea for the book, but found it hard to do the research and polishing necessary for the story. Susanne loved the premise of the story and offered to handle that aspect of it in partnership with her. The name seemed a natural choice. The rest as they say is history.
When Front Porch Romance offered them their first contract, they actually spoke by phone for the first time, cementing a working relationship they hope will go on for years to come. While both authors will continue to write solo, watch for more books and short stories from the duo.
