Every
time she closes her eyes he’s there…waiting for her.
Brandi Connelly is too embarrassed
to tell anyone about the strange dreams she’s having. Partly because she’s
afraid they will think she’s crazy…mostly because the things that go on while
she’s sleeping make her blush. As the nightly visions become all too real she’s
afraid they’re not dreams at all. If that’s true, then she’s been having some
wild nights with one very hot demon doing things she never thought she would.
Draken Barrand is determined to
claim his mate. There’s just one problem - he’s trapped behind the walls of a
mental institution. The only way he can reach her is through her dreams, where
he claims her and marks her as his own. But his mate’s life is threatened when
the Leader of his Legion finds out about his unlawful mating.
Will Drake be able to break free of
his cell in time to save his woman? If he does will she finally accept him as
the man of her dreams and her reality?
Excerpt
“Do you
ever sleep?”
His smile grew bigger at her question. “Yes, I
do sleep.”
“When?”
“During
the day?”
“Why?”
She was being nosy but she wanted to know more about him.
“So I
can have more time with you...at night.”
His
answer shocked her. But hadn’t she
suspected that all along. Smile gone, he stared at her like she was the
only woman on earth. It was the kind of stare she saw on movies right before
the hero kissed his damsel. There would be no kissing between her and Draken. That
thought didn’t distress her a bit… well maybe it did, just a little.
“Why would you want more time with me? She
asked. “And why do you always stare at me like that?”
“You’ve
asked two questions. Which one would you like for me to answer?”
Was he
serious? Brandi ran her hands through her tangled curls. Why must he be so
difficult? “Answer the second one, please.”
“I don’t
recall the second question.”
“Yes you
do. I just asked it.”
He grinned and Brandi realized he was only
joking. She smiled back at him unable to resist his subtle charm. “You like
upsetting me, don’t you?”
His grin
disappeared. “Have I done so, upset you? That was never my intention.”
“No, no.
You haven’t really upset me. Not this time. It’s just an expression I use.”
“So you
are not upset with me?”
“No, I’m
not.”
“Good,”
his devilish grinned returned and her heart did a somersault. This conversation
was getting off track.
“Since
your old age prevents you from remembering the question, I will ask you again.
Why do you stare at me like that – all of the time?”
“Like
what?”
“Like
that. The way you’re staring at me now, why do you do that?” She needed to
know. He didn’t answer right away. He just stood there, continuing to stare at
her; continuing to cause her to wonder how it would feel to wrap her arms
around his broad shoulders and press her body closer to his. Stop thinking like that Brandi. She had
no right to fantasize over a patient. There had to be some kind of law against
that.
Could she go to jail if
anyone found out? She could definitely get fired if word got out
that she often had inappropriate thoughts about a patient. But how could she
not? Look at him. He was a tall glass of ‘damn I wish I could spend a couple of
nights in your arms.’ Brandi sighed.
“Why are
you staring at me like that?”
His
question snapped her back to reality. “T-this is how I always stare at you.
Like you’re my patient and like I’m your ward clerk.” Brandi swallowed
nervously. She knew exactly how she’d been staring at him, like she wanted to
touch him…taste him. Get it together
Brandi. You can only ogle your patient from afar.
“You
don’t lie well,” he told her. “So why do you choose to do so?”
“I’m not
lying.” How was he able to see right through her? “I have to get back to work.”
“Don’t
you want me to answer your question?”
“Not
really.” She’d already been down here too long. Brandi walked over to the door
and gripped the door knob.
“I stare
at you because you’re beautiful.”
She
paused, her hand still wrapped around the handle in a death grip. He couldn’t
have possibly said what she thought he did.
“Sometimes
your beauty overwhelms me and I can’t force my eyes away from your face and
form. That is why I stare at you like that, because you captivate me.”
She’d
heard him correctly. Wow! How was she supposed to respond to that? What was she
supposed to say? Thanks, oh and um, I stare at you for the very same reason.
She couldn’t say that to her patient. There was nothing for her to say?
Everything that she wished she could say was inappropriate. This whole
conversation was inappropriate. Brandi twisted the door knob.
“Please
don’t go yet,” he whispered.
The fact
that she didn’t want to go was the reason why Brandi opened the door and ran
from his cell. The words he’d uttered replayed themselves over and over in her
head as she walked swiftly to her desk.
He
thought she was beautiful.
She
tried to keep her expression stoic, not wanting to smile at his comment. His
thoughts didn’t flatter her at all. Yep, that was her story and she was
sticking to it. So what if her beauty overwhelmed him? Brandi sat down at her
desk and folded her hands in her lap.
His opinion of her didn’t matter. He was a patient at a mental
institution.
