Guest post by Heather M. Gardner author of Maguire's Corner

Winter in New York is different every year. Sometimes we have lots of snow, sometimes lots of ice and sometimes we have very little of either, but it’s almost always cold.
Maguire’s Corner takes place in January in the New York area. I tried not to dwell on the weather but sometimes the chilly temperatures came in handy…
Excerpt from Maguire’s Corner
***
There was nothing Maggie loved more than seeing Crumbs packed full of regulars and tourists. There was a roaring fire in the fireplace, the smell of Sam’s fresh baked apple pies permeated the air and the coffee bar was bustling.
January was traditionally slow for retail with Christmas behind them and Valentine’s Day a month away so, the Chamber of Commerce created the Maguire’s Corner January Fair to perk up local business.
Maggie had situated herself at a tall bar table near the entrance so she could pass out rewards cards and explain the rules of the event to shoppers.
She was getting quite chilled by the door even though she was wearing her favorite Irish wool crewneck sweater over dark blue denim jeans and brown knee-high boots.
Three times she had headed towards her office to get her coat, but she kept getting distracted by new people coming in.
At one point, a line had formed to get in the shop and Maggie went outside to assure customers that it would only be a few minute wait and that the coffee would be well worth it.
Before she stepped back in someone across the street caught her eye. She had to wait for a truck to pass before she could see him again. He was a tall man leaning against a building, wearing a long black coat that flapped in the cold breeze.
He didn’t seem to be looking at her or at anything that she could see. She couldn’t figure out what had made her look twice. And then she knew. He was tapping a beat with his foot.
Maggie’s heart pounded harder as she continued to stare at the figure. Questions raced through her mind. Was that him? The man who ran down Mr. Harris? The one who had tried to kill her? What should she do? Should she call out? Should she call Jack?
Traffic began to pick up and it was getting more difficult to see. Then a large individual stepped in front of her totally blocking her sight.
“What are you doing out here?”
Startled that the person obstructing her view was none other than Jack, she glanced up to see herself reflected in his sunglasses.
“And, where’s your coat?”
Maggie shivered. “Inside. I wasn’t going to be out here that long.”
She let him hustle her back through the coffee shop door and took her seat behind the table rubbing her hands together to try and warm them.
Jack unzipped his black winter coat that he wore over his uniform. He took off his gloves and shoved them in his pockets then removed his sunglasses and hung them on the front of his shirt.
Maggie met his frosty blue gaze and actually relaxed.
“I can’t believe how busy the streets are. It’s damn cold and people are out shopping,” Jack said, shaking his head.
“The January Fair has always been popular. People are bored and they want out of their homes.”
“I can barely understand what you’re saying your teeth are chattering so much. Here,” Jack removed his scarf and wrapped it around her neck. “I’ll be right back,” he said.
After a quick stop in front of the fireplace, he threaded his way through the crowd towards the coffee bar.
The scarf was warm from Jack’s body and smelled really good, like spice and leather. Maggie chose to ignore the fluttering in her stomach while she continued to enjoy the scent until her attention was drawn to a customer asking about the event.

Keep reading to find out how!

Coffee shop owner Maggie Maguire doesn’t trust the new police chief her father hired to protect Maguire’s Corner. He’s a stranger, cold, bossy and annoyingly handsome. But, Maggie’s witnessed a serious crime and now someone’s trying to kill her. The man that aggravates her most might be the only one that can help her.

Police Chief Jack Munro likes his new job and his new town, and unfortunately he also likes the stubborn but beautiful town sweetheart. His self-imposed hands-off Maggie policy is about to be put to the ultimate test when he must keep her close to protect her while he tracks down a ruthless killer.

Determined to ignore Jack’s charms, Maggie attempts to help him unravel the mystery but when their lives hang in the balance she must decide how much she’s willing to risk to save the man she suddenly can’t resist.

But, Heather, where can I buy it?

Heather M. Gardner’s love of books began at an early age, on the hand-woven rugs of her small town library, where her mother worked. It was a natural progression to write romance, when she started to create her own stories.

THE ARRIVAL
By Janelle Lee

Blurb: Amy Barrett’s arrival in Rainbow Falls was supposed to be simple as it was short. But when she arrived to conduct her business and was ready to leave again, she realized even the    best laid plans hit a snag from the outset. Excerpt:

Her stranger had killer looks. He was handsome, clean cut and wearing sturdy built for comfort boots. He looked normal. She supposed most serial killers could be described as being normal.
She didn’t care if she did become a victim of a highway madman, she just wanted it to be over. Even the thought of a deadly liaison with a serial killer didn’t faze her, actually she was beginning to feel it maybe her only answer. She had been travelling for two days through Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. Now finally Wyoming and she had enough. : Should read, feel it might be her only answer
Amy had almost given up when she got halfway across Iowa and the car began to give her grief. The air conditioner had packed it in and the continual clunking sound made itself known every few minutes. The heat had her perspiring, while the constant noise had her gritting her teeth. By the time she crossed into Nebraska, she was ready to abandon the car then kick the crap out of it and to hell with the deposit and her designer shoes.
The car was as fickle as her mood. She started out feeling quite confident that she could do the job, but a combination of car trouble and lack of proper sleep had her confidence ebbing away with each miserable mile.
Amy stared at the stranger as he took a few steps towards her. Common sense prevailed and she preferred not to have to deal with a serial killer. She made sure her window was up with only an inch separating her from a possibly slow and painful death.
She couldn’t be murdered through an inch gap could she? She rolled her eyes at her absurd question. He probably had a gun. The car window wouldn’t be bullet proof. It didn’t even have working air conditioning.

The Author
I have a number of titles published with Front Porch Romance: Rainbow Falls 1 and 2 with 3 due out in early 2014, Darcy's Dilemma, Relinquishing Christmas, Boots, Bullets & Buckets, Rescue Me, Pigeon Pair & Sail Away. Also in 2014 my first title Paragon, a thriller/ suspense, will be published with Front Porch Reads. I am super excited about that. Guest post: Lucky 13 by Jane Godman

Lucky 13!

Ever since my daughter was born on October 13th, I’ve considered thirteen to be a lucky number, and 2013 has certainly lived up to that belief. It’s been a great year for me as an author!
In February, my first book, ‘The Rebel’s Promise’ was published by Front Porch Romance. This was followed in June by ‘The Corsair’s Revenge’ and in December by ‘An Improper Lady’. These three books are historical romances set during the Georgian era. They are the Powder and Patch Series and there are characters who appear in all three.
While these exciting things were happening with Front Porch Romance, I was also writing a Gothic novel with all of the traditional elements of dark secrets, brooding characters and an atmospheric setting. I didn’t know, when I started the book, that HarlequinE were looking for ‘new gothics’ for their Shivers line. When I read an interview with Malle Vallik, Director of Editorial Digital Initiatives at Harlequin, saying ‘send us your gothics!’ I did just that. Then I sat back to wait the 14 weeks it suggests in the guidelines. Imagine my surprise when, just a week later, I got ‘the call’ from Malle telling me how much the team at HarlequinE loved my book!
Now, I’m eagerly awaiting the launch of my first HarlequinE Shivers book ‘Legacy of Darkness’ which will be published in a four book digital box set on 6th January 2014.  My fellow authors, Barbara J. Hancock, Dawn Brown and Jenna Ryan have written awesome Shivers books as part of this launch. I’m delighted to be part of such a talented line up. ‘Four beguiling stories, one great price!’ is our tag-line and our Amazon blurb reads:
‘Lose yourself in four eerie, atmospheric tales of romance…and revenge. In a decaying mansion, a ghostly presence refuses to relinquish the artist she's long haunted to a new lover and muse. In an ancient Cornish castle, an innocent woman may be sacrificed to a family's legacy of madness. On the fringes of a Welsh estate, a vengeful figure targets the long-lost daughter of a cursed clan. In the Louisiana bayou, a serial killer hunts the one woman who can bring his demonic crimes to light. If you love Gothics by Victoria Holt, Daphne du Maurier and Barbara Michaels, and enjoy dark romance, then delve into the new Shivers Collection. Mood, mystery … romance that makes you shiver. Look for more titles coming in April 2014.’
So what does 2014 hold in store for Jane Godman? Well, the sequel to ‘Legacy of Darkness’ (‘Echoes of Darkness’) will be part of the April 2014 Shivers box set and I am working on Book Three in the series right now. I also have a stand alone Shivers title, Valley of Nightmares, which is currently scheduled for publication in October 2014 and I have several ideas for gothics, and a few other lines, in mind. Enough to make 2014 another busy year!
I’m often asked the question ‘what is the difference between a gothic romance and a paranormal romance?’. Gothics may have elements of the supernatural, horror or unexplained such as ghosts or reincarnation, but they are not paranormal romances. Generally, in a gothic, the main protagonist is human. In a Jane Godman Shivers, you can expect:
1.           A dark, gloomy and atmospheric setting.
2.           A feisty heroine who pushes the boundaries.
3.           A hero you fall in love with …
4.           And a villain you fall in love with (for different reasons)
5.           Dark secrets, the past comes back to haunt the present.
6.           High levels of sensuality, the shivers don’t come just from the unexplained!
I’d love to hear what you think of our HarlequinE Shivers box set!

Legacy of Darkness
1837 Cornwall, England
Orphaned, penniless and reduced to the role of lady’s companion, Lucy Alleyne is relieved when a distant relation spirits her away to Castle Athal. But gratitude soon gives way to fear—and unlooked-for pleasure.
The ancient Cornish castle is a dark monument to family, fortune and infamy. Within its walls, the Jago family keeps its wards close…and its secrets closer. As soon as Lucy arrives at her new home, she is drawn to Tynan, Earl of Athal. Although the young lord is handsome and caring, he is tortured by mental illness, like his father before him. They share a meeting of souls which is completely opposite to her very physical response to Tynan's uncle, Uther: a commanding, seductive presence whose leonine power radiates from his every word and gesture.
These two Jago men have innocent Lucy enthralled: mind, soul and body. But if she remains within the poisonous castle keep, with its history of ill-starred passion and madness, a mere broken heart will seem a mercy.

The Powder and Patch Collection

Book One ‘The Rebel’s Promise’
In December 1745, Jacobite troops, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, march on Derby intent on seizing the throne. Rosie Delacourt’s quiet existence is thrown into turmoil when she rescues a rebel lord from certain death. A passionate attachment blossoms but there is a price on Jack’s head and he must flee the country. Before he leaves, he makes Rosie a promise that he will return and claim her as his bride.
Rosie believes that Jack has been killed in battle at Culloden. She is threatened with ruin and forced into a distasteful betrothal with her ruthless neighbour, Sir Clive Sheridan. When Jack returns, he is unable to hide the anguish he feels at her betrayal ... and Rosie dare not risk both their lives by telling him the truth. They inhabit the same privileged world of balls, routs and parties, but it seems the only feelings which remain between Jack and Rosie now are bitterness and anger. When danger throws them together again, however, they are reminded of the tenderness they once shared.

Book Two ‘The Corsair’s Revenge’
Caro Trelawn has no idea why she has been kidnapped on the way to her wedding.
She is taken prisoner aboard a pirate galleon by the notorious brigand known as Le Corsaire, a man who seems strangely familiar.
When Laurent Bergeron, Comte de St Valier, succumbs to a vengeful impulse and abducts Caro, he does not bargain on the impact his feisty captive has on him. From the minute they set eyes on each other, their relationship is volatile and fiery. Try as he might to keep his distance, Laurent cannot resist the passion that sizzles between them. So how will he react when Caro succeeds in escaping from him?
Caro’s journey takes her from the wild Cornish coast to the elegant salons of Paris and ends, with a shocking denouement, in the slums of London’s St Giles.  In The Corsair’s Revenge, we meet some familiar faces from Jane Godman’s first novel, The Rebel’s Promise.

Book Three ‘An Improper Lady’
Lady Isabella Cavendish is the most beautiful, and the most scandalous, woman in England. The powdered, scented fops who frequent London’s ballrooms are definitely not Bella’s style … but there is something different about Sir Peregrine Pomeroy. There is a sizzling attraction between them, but Perry seems oddly reluctant to consummate their mutual passion.
He finally confesses that he is in love with Bella, and that nothing less than marriage will do for him.
But there are dark secrets in Bella’s past and she is not prepared to bring dishonour to Perry’s proud name. She tells him she is happy to be his mistress, but she will not marry him.
The impasse continues until they are snowbound at a Christmas house party. Perry challenges Bella to a game of billiards. He insists on a forfeit. If he wins Bella will become his mistress. If Bella wins, she must agree to marry him.

Jane Godman Author Bio
I am an avid reader of historical romances, and have always enjoyed writing (I still have a copy of the medieval novel I wrote, in felt tip pen, aged 14!).
My Powder and Patch romances, published by Front Porch Romance, are set in the Georgian era - from the wild passion of the Jacobite rebellion to the charm and formality of the Regency - with heroes and heroines you fall instantly in love with, fascinating and amusing supporting characters and luscious settings.
I also love the darker side of the romance novel and I write Gothic mystery/romance books for HarlequinE as part of their ‘Shivers’ line.
I live in England and love to travel to European cities which are steeped in history and romance. Venice, Dubrovnik and Vienna are amongst my favourites. I am a teacher, married to a lovely man, mum to two grown up children and slave to a spoilt-brat cat.

Short Excerpt Trust Me?

I turn to face him; he puts his other arm around me. We are in the same position as before when the last kiss attempt failed. My arms are tight around his neck, his arms around my waist. I look down. He lifts up my chin so I’m lost in his gaze. His hand goes back to my waist. He swallows; I think he’s as nervous as I am. He tilts his head and leans in … I back away quickly.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, looking hurt.
“Oh, no, it’s not you. I think … I might have garlic breath.”
He laughs and pulls me back to him. “So do I.” He pulls me in tighter, and before I know what’s happening, his lips are on mine. I give in and surrender to him completely.
This feels like one of my fantasies, only way, way better. He holds me tight as one hand moves from my waist to caress my cheek, kissing me softly but sensually. My hands move to the back of his head, and I grab a lock of hair in each hand. He moves our bodies so that I’m against the railing at the edge of the deck. He moves his hand from my waist to hold the rail as I still grasp his hair. The kissing becomes feverishly passionate; his tongue against mine as they intertwine with each other. Our breathing becomes faster and erratic. Our kissing becomes more intimate. We are in perfect sync with each other. I pull him closer to me, our whole bodies touching. My heart is pounding fast and hard. His hand moves from my face to the back of my head, pulling me tight. He moves my hair from the side of my neck, breaks our kiss and kisses my neck slowly and seductively. I sigh and breathe in a stuttering motion. I open my eyes to see the waitress standing there, gawking at us. I stiffen as I see her. He pulls back and looks at me. With my eyes, I gesture toward the waitress. He turns, looks, and lets out a little huff. He leans in towards me.
“Now that’s a first kiss,” he whispers as he grabs my hand and leads me over to the table. I can’t help but smile.

Short Excerpt Love Me?

My nerves start to get the better of me, I start to feel nauseous; those darn pesky butterflies attack again. I’m not sure why I’m nervous, whether it’s the shoes making me unstable or whether it’s the memory of our first date, our first touch, or our first kiss that’s making me bashful.
I turn the corner to see him standing there with a bunch of red roses, in the suit that he changed into earlier, this time with a baby pink tie on. Behind him is that gorgeous waterfall cascading down the cliff with the lush greenery surrounding us. As I take a step closer, I hear music playing. “Thank You for Loving Me” by Bon Jovi. It’s our song. I feel my eyes welling up as all the emotion and love I feel for this man is becoming too much to bear.
His smile is beaming from ear to ear when I approach. Finally I reach him. He holds out his hand for me to take. I take it, and he pulls me into a tight embrace.
       “This is perfect,” I whisper.
“Perfection for perfection, my love.” He kisses my cheek, and places the bouquet of flowers on the railing.
